Shailendra Singh, popularly known as Shailendra, was an Indian lyricist and poet who wrote Hindi songs for several Bollywood films. He was born on August 30, 1923, in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, and passed away on December 14, 1966, in Mumbai, India.
Shailendra started his career as a songwriter with the film “Barsaat” (1949). He went on to write lyrics for several successful Bollywood films, including “Awaara,” “Shree 420,” “Jagte Raho,” “Anari,” “Chhalia,” and “Guide,” among many others. He collaborated with some of the most successful music composers in Bollywood, including Shankar Jaikishan, S.D. Burman, and Salil Chowdhury.
Shailendra’s lyrics were known for their simplicity and depth of emotion. He often wrote about social issues, the human condition, and the struggles of the common man. Some of his popular songs include “Awara Hoon” from “Awaara,” “Mera Joota Hai Japani” from “Shree 420,” “Jeena Yahan Marna Yahan” from “Mera Naam Joker,” and “Yeh Mera Deewanapan Hai” from “Yahudi,” among many others.
Shailendra received several awards and honors for his contribution to Indian music, including the National Film Award for Best Lyricist and the Filmfare Award for Best Lyricist. Even today, his songs continue to be popular among music lovers and are considered classics of Indian film music.
